Weekend Picks: Things to do and see Feb. 18-20
Hey straight family! You know how frustrating it is to witness your queer friends get discriminated against? Remember how helpless you felt when Prop. 8 passed? If only there was something you could do to help …
Wait! There is! Because my picks for this weekend are … (I know I’m not supposed to say this) kind of GAY!
These events are not all the way gay though, there’s plenty of room for straight ally support. Oh yeah, queerious and questioning, you can come, too.

On Friday at 9:30 p.m., it’s more raw power from the womb-anish types. You know, those ShePeoples!
This monthly event features women of all sexual orientations rocking the mic, the paintbrush, the dance floor and all things artists do. It’s located at Smaac Youth Center, 1608 Webster St., Oakland. Chef Jaiden Parker will be serving chicken and waffle plates for $8.
~~~~~~
On Saturday at 2 p.m., treat yourself to an afternoon of poetry and music, featuring work by Jezebel Delilah X, Jaynie lara (Weye Hlapsi), Ksuzanne Massey, Rasheedah Sabreen Mwongozi, Zemaya and the lovely and talented Bushmama Africa.
"Journey of the Souls: Celebrating Queer Culture and History" is produced by Jaki Lee and the Women's Committee of the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Society. The performance will be at the First Unitarian Church of Oakland, 685 14th St., Oakland.
~~~~~~
At 2 p.m. Sunday, don’t miss this chance to affordably update your wardrobe with the help of queer stylists. It’s also a chance to benefit dope community leaders who are invested in racial and gender justice.
Proceeds will go to Brown Boi Project. If you donate your gently-used clothes, you’ll get $25 in brown boi bucks. Bespoke Boi Night will be held at Grand Lake Coffee House, 440 Grand Ave., Oakland.
