Why Do We All Write Haiku in Grade School?

Yone Noguchi and his American Host, Joaquin Miller

Yone Noguchi and his American Host, Joaquin Miller

Haiku is a simple, elegant form of poetry. It's not uncommon for teachers to assign them in school, but how did this Japanese art make its way to America?

Find out at the opening of Yone Noguchi in California: a Japanese Poet Among Oakland's Famed Writers at Peralta Hacienda Historical Park. Noguchi’s exchange with Oaklanders like Joaquin Miller formed lasting cultural and artistic bonds between Japan and the United States, especially the Bay Area. Learn more about Noguchi’s time in Oakland, and experience a traditional tea ceremony and an ichibana flower arranging lesson courtesy of Oakland’s Kojin-an Zendo. Click here for the poster.

Friends of Peralta Hacienda Historical Park is a Fruitvale-based non-profit that runs the Peralta House Museum and provides school field trips, after-school and summer programs, volunteer opportunities, community parties and cultural events. The mission of Friends is to promote understanding, historical healing and community amid change and diversity, and to give voice to the many cultures that have created – and are still transforming – California. The park was once the headquarters of the 45,000-acre Rancho San Antonio, and the first European building in the East Bay. Today, the Peralta House Museum is full of five-senses exhibits about Fruitvale history. Pay a visit, and leave your story!
