On Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at 6:00pm PST the streets of West Oakland will host a candlelight vigil held in front of 526 Henry Street, Oakland, CA in memory of Elder Berresford “Berry” Bingham; a beloved father of three children and known throughout the neighborhood as the “Community Dad.”  Bingham was the Political Director for SEIU 1021 and a 20 year retired veteran of the United States

Reports of man with gun lead to lock-down, evacuation of La Esquelita School and nearby area

Reports from this morning of a person with a gun at the Oakland Unified School District facility, La Esquelita School @ 1100 3rd Avenue have led to the area beung evacuated and locked down, .  The Peralta Community College District new parking lot at East 8th Street and 5th avenue, (with solar panels, next to baseball field) is being used as a staging area for La Esquelita School families

According to East Bay News Services' Sanjiv Handa, down in San Jose the Mayor and City Council members were handed a memo from City Manager Debra Figone about next steps in the process of selecting a new SJ poice cheif when they met last night. The memo reads in part:

Oakland Housing Authority (OHA) will open its wait list to new applications for the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program during a five-day period beginning on Tuesday, January 25, at  8 a.m. through Saturday, January 29, 2011 at 5 p.m., Executive Director Eric Johnson announced today.
