In an area considered mostly destitute and dangerous, a movement is growing to bring commerce, interest and hope back to East Oakland.

The East MacArthur Merchant’s Association (EMMA) came together three years ago, initially to build support amongst each other as small business owners, but now has blossomed into a full grown community-centered organization.

Did you shop locally this holiday season? Even if you traveled to a big box in the E-town, Oakland shares territory and sales tax with a percentage of Emeryville’s big box districts ... and you may have consciously spent a percentage of your holiday dollars in Oakland.

In recent years, our political leaders have become aware of the importance of shopping locally. Our new Mayor, Jean Quan, even spoke to the significance of the issue in her inaugural address. She asked Oaklanders to buy 25 percent more of their goods at home as a way to help pay for more police staffing. New Councilwoman Libby Schaaf is even leading by example - she told me that she only shops in Oakland. Her inaugural outfit was purchased in Montclair.

Kids planning to see Old St. Nick during his annual visit to Santa's Crib @Charcoal Park may have to wait a few days.

On Tuesday, a new driver took a wrong turn, hitting several cars before plowing into the corner of the community garden and African-American museum - located at 2727 Fruitvale Avenue - that hosts a holiday toy giveaway and provides neighborhood children the chance to talk to Santa one-on-one.
