When it comes to helping Oakland's public schools, new education policy advisor Lewis Cohen is thinking big thoughts.

"Our role is to see a bigger, long-range picture,"said Cohen, who recently was appointed by Mayor Jean Quan to oversee her administration's education platform.

Mayor Jean Quan is bringing her organizing skills to City Hall.

The mayor has issued a city-wide call for residents to volunteer in their communities and she is working with local organizations and regional agencies to get Oaklanders to donate free time toward improving the city.

Jean's Mayor! Here are the plans for today, Jan. 3: 

As a part of the inaugural events, Mayor-elect Jean Quan will be leading a “Remembering and Making History” walk, where she will retrace her own and Oakland’s history from Chinatown to the Fox Theater.

The march will reach Malonga Casquelourd Center for the Arts, home of the SOA offices at 9:45a.m. The schedule for the march follows the listing of the pre-inauguaral events.
